...about bc cherries
Many of the best cherry varieties Canadians and the rest of the world love to eat, were developed through cross-breeding programs at the Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre (PARC) in Summerland, BC. It can take up to 10 years to test, develop and bring to market new varieties of BC cherries. Quite an investment in time, money and risk for Canadian cherry growers. Cherry varieties have many different characteristics, taste, firmness, sweetness, colour and size. Which one is your favourite?
BC cherries go through rigorous quality checks, before, during and post harvest. It's funny...each country has their own peculiar tastes and favourites (including Provinces in Canada). Keeping this in mind, cherries are usually harvested and packed knowing well in advance just where they are going to end up.
BC Cherries are grown throughout the Okanagan and Creston Valleys during the months of June through early September. British Columbia has the perfect climate conditions for growing great cherries and Canadian cherry varieties are some of the best in the world. So much so...that many of the world's top cherry producing countries have planted and rely heavily on our Canadian cherry varieties for a bountiful crop. We encourage you to visit the Okanagan and Creston Valleys in beautiful British Columbia and take a tour of our wonderful cherry orchards.
Cherry Growing Regions...
I think the question is...where don't we ship? Each year BC growers continue to expand their reach into new international markets. An exciting new market for us has been mainland China, where top dollar is being paid for our BC cherries. In many Asian countries, it is a centuries-long tradition to bring gifts of fresh fruit when paying a visit to friends and family...a tradition BC growers can luckily capitalize upon!
